Teng Kai-wei Shines in Astros Debut with First Season Win

Houston: Teng Kai-wei, the only Taiwanese player on an opening-day roster in the 2026 Major League Baseball (MLB) season, earned his first win of the year with the Houston Astros in his season debut. Teng entered in relief in the top of the fifth inning of a game against the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday, with the Astros trailing 5-0. He pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts, as Houston scored 11 runs during his outing to secure an 11-9 comeback victory.

According to Focus Taiwan, the win marked the Astros' first of the season and the third of Teng's MLB career. Teng expressed his excitement after the game, stating, "It's my first time pitching for the Astros, so I might have been a bit too excited in my first inning." He emphasized the importance of staying calm, which helped him perform comfortably in the subsequent innings.

Teng replaced starting pitcher Cristian Javier with two outs and a runner on third base. After walking Jorge Soler on four consecutive balls, Teng allowed the runner to score on a wild pitch, charged as Javier's sixth earned run. Teng's first strike came on his seventh pitch, a 95.1 mph fastball that led Yo¡n Moncada to ground out, ending the inning.

During his outing, Teng allowed a single hit, a single by Oswald Peraza in the seventh, but successfully retired the following three batters, including Mike Trout. Out of his 39 pitches, 19 were strikes, with his fastball reaching a top speed of 95.6 mph.

Teng attributed the victory to his teammates' relentless offense. "I'm grateful that our offense didn't give up and kept scoring," he commented. The Astros managed to score three runs in the fifth and exploded for eight more in the sixth inning. The Angels' reliever Walbert Ure±a took the loss after conceding six runs on four hits and two walks, none of which were earned.

With this win, the Astros improved their record to 1-2.
