Bangkok:Thailand and New Zealand are collaborating to advance the Asia-Pacific carbon market, focusing on connecting carbon credit mechanisms to support the Net Zero goal. Mr. Suchart Chomklin, Thailand's Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, is spearheading efforts for international cooperation on carbon markets.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Suchart has tasked the Department of Climate Change and Environment (DCE) and the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO) to co-host the 16th Asia Pacific Carbon Markets Roundtable (16th APCMR) with the New Zealand Ministry of Environment. Scheduled for October 19-20, 2026, at the Centara Grand at CentralWorld Hotel in Bangkok, the meeting aims to exchange knowledge and enhance cooperation on carbon market mechanisms in the Asia-Pacific region, supporting greenhouse gas reduction and the Net Zero target.
The conference began with a welcoming speech by HE Joanna Anderson, New Zealand's Ambassador to ASEAN, and an opening address from Dr. Pirun Saiyasitpanich, Director-General of the TGO. Experts and stakeholders from the Asia-Pacific region participated, discussing carbon markets, emission trading systems, and the use of market mechanisms to address climate change.
Mr. Suchart emphasized the significance of the APCMR conference as a platform for promoting international cooperation in developing effective carbon market mechanisms and facilitating the transition to a low-carbon society. A technical training session will be held on October 21, 2026, focusing on the Carbon Dioxide Offset and Emission Reduction Program for International Aviation (CORSIA), aimed at enhancing the knowledge and understanding of government agencies, project developers, airlines, and stakeholders.
Additionally, the National Assembly participated in a seminar on "Regional Carbon Market Mechanisms and Interoperability," exchanging ideas on linking international carbon market mechanisms and promoting capacity building among various sectors to drive concrete greenhouse gas emission reduction.
Mr. Nakorn Trakwiraphat, Director of the TGO, highlighted the importance of international cooperation and the exchange of experiences for developing a carbon market. The APCMR conference provides a platform for countries to exchange knowledge and expand cooperation to support carbon market initiatives and achieve long-term greenhouse gas reduction targets.
