The State Railway of Thailand has announced the temporary suspension of some northern routes following a landslide.

The State Railway of Thailand announced the temporary suspension of train services on the northern route between Lampang and Chiang Mai stations after landslides and flash floods eroded the track bedrock in several places. The origin and destination stations of 12 trains will be changed.

Mr. Wirit Amrapal, Governor of the State Railway of Thailand, revealed that at 23.42 on September 22, 2024, a landslide occurred at the entrance of the Khun Tan Tunnel and flash floods eroded the rocks under the tracks between Mae Tan Noi – Khun Tan – Ta Chomphu stations, causing damage to several parts of the railway. The State Railway of Thailand therefore had to announce the temporary suspension of train services on the northern route between Lampang and Chiang Mai stations to ensure travel safety and to expedite repairs to restore normal use as soon as possible. In addition, he has ordered officials to expedite assistance and ensure the safety of passengers so that they are least affected. He has also urged inspections and expedited repairs of damaged railway tracks, as well as to closely monitor the flood situation in order to monitor and order appropriate solutions.

Initially, the State Railway of Thailand has arranged to facilitate passengers by providing cars from Lampang Station to Lamphun Station and Chiang Mai Station. As for the repairs, it is expected that it will take no less than 3 days (if there is no additional rain or flash floods) to be completed.
