Kaohsiung: The Taiwan Ciaotou District Prosecutors Office in Kaohsiung has filed charges against three Vietnamese individuals for illegal detention, intimidation, and human trafficking. The charges stem from their alleged collaboration as a group of three or more to commit these offenses.
According to Focus Taiwan, the individuals include a Vietnamese woman surnamed Ph?m, who gained Taiwanese citizenship through marriage, her boyfriend, a migrant worker surnamed Nguyn, and another Vietnamese associate also surnamed Nguy?n. The prosecutors disclosed that Ph?m and her boyfriend, who had left his original employer, were engaged in the construction sector in Taichung. They allegedly facilitated the illegal employment of unregistered migrant workers at several construction sites.
In February, two undocumented Indonesian workers, dissatisfied with their working conditions, sought employment elsewhere in Yilan County. Prosecutors revealed that Ph?m responded by posting a wanted notice for these workers on social media, subsequently locating and threatening them.
The indictment further alleges that the three accused, along with two other undocumented workers, abducted the Indonesian workers in Yilan, seized their passports, and unlawfully restricted their movement. The defendants purportedly fabricated substantial debts in the victims’ names, using the threat of police involvement to coerce them into working without remuneration.
The three Vietnamese individuals have been apprehended, while the two additional undocumented workers remain at large and have been declared wanted. Currently, Ph?m and her boyfriend are held in prosecutorial custody.
