Tokyo International Film Festival to Showcase Six Taiwanese Productions

Tokyo: Six Taiwanese productions are set to be featured at the 2025 Tokyo International Film Festival, highlighting the collaboration between the festival and the Taiwan Cultural Center in Japan. The program, “Taiwan Cinema Renaissance 2025 — Diversity in Taiwanese Society,” will run from October 27 to November 5.

According to Focus Taiwan, the festival will spotlight four feature films: “The Waves Will Carry Us” by Lau Kek-huat, “Double Happiness” by Joseph Hsu, “April” by Freddy Tang, and the Golden Bell Award-winning “Crown Shyness” by Chang Chun-yu. Notably, “April” and “Double Happiness” will be making their world premieres during the event.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture announced that the directors and main cast of these films are expected to attend the festival’s opening ceremony. Additionally, Taiwanese actress Gwei Lun-mei will serve on the jury for the festival’s Competition section.

While no Taiwanese films are competing in the main Competition this year, two Taiwanese short films have been selected for the Asian Students’ Film Conference. These are “Ready! Serve! Smash!” directed by Wang Hao-tai and “Forever and a Day” directed by Chen Li-hsuan.

The festival will also host a roundtable discussion on November 3 titled “The Power of Women’s Film Festivals,” featuring Taiwanese film festival curators Cho Ting-wu, Hsieh I-hsuan, and Chen Huei-yin, as noted by the ministry.
