Tsai lauds Taiwan’s COVID-19 successes ahead of national day

Keelung,  President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) on Friday praised Taiwan’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and continuing economic growth at a time when much of the world has struggled with both, in remarks delivered ahead of the country’s Double Ten National Day on Saturday.

Speaking at the 2020 Proud of Taiwan celebration in Keelung City before a crowd of about 12,000 people, Tsai said Taiwan had not only controlled the spread of COVID-19 this year, but also helped other countries do the same.

She also pointed out that at a time when much of the world has fallen into economic recession, Taiwan has managed to maintain economic growth.

“The Taiwanese people have worked together to achieve these results, and in the global political and economic transformation that is now underway, Taiwan is earning more and more recognition,” Tsai said.

The president also praised Keelung for its fusion of old and new, which she said offered a clear expression of this year’s National Day themes of pride in tradition and connecting with the world.

At the event that typically honors the contributions of overseas Taiwanese, Tsai welcomed the estimated 1,500 overseas guests who overcame obstacles, including a 14-day quarantine, to return “home” for the national day celebrations.

Tsai was joined on Keelung’s waterfront by Legislative Speaker You Si-kun (游錫堃) and Keelung Mayor Lin Yu-chang (林右昌), among others.

The four-hour show featured a diverse lineup of 13 Taiwanese entertainers, including the punk rock band Fire Ex. (滅火器), thehip hop group Nine One One (玖壹壹), Bunun singer-songwriter Biung (王宏恩) and the percussion group U Theatre (優人神鼓).
