TSMC Awards NT$25,000 Sports Day Bonus to Global Workforce

Hsinchu: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world’s largest contract chipmaker, has announced that each employee, both in Taiwan and internationally, will receive a NT$25,000 (US$806) bonus in recognition of Sports Day.

According to Focus Taiwan, TSMC Chairman and CEO C.C. Wei made the announcement during the annual Sports Day event at Hsinchu County Stadium. Wei expressed his gratitude for the employees’ contributions that have led to record-breaking sales and profits this year. As a gesture of appreciation, the company decided to distribute this “small gift,” continuing the tradition from past events.

This year, the Sports Day bonus has increased from last year’s NT$20,000, and for the first time, it will be extended to TSMC employees working abroad. TSMC, with a workforce of 75,000 employees globally, is set to distribute approximately NT$1.875 billion in bonuses this year, compared to NT$1.2 billion last year.

Employees at TSMC’s facilities in Arizona, USA; Kumamoto, Japan; and Dresden, Germany, will also benefit from the bonus. The company’s global expansion efforts have been driven by incentives from various countries seeking to establish semiconductor manufacturing capabilities amid geopolitical tensions in the Taiwan Strait.

The annual Sports Day, initiated in 1993, is a highly anticipated event among TSMC employees due to the generous bonuses. Although the event was canceled from 2020 to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, bonuses of NT$12,000 in 2020 and NT$16,000 in 2021 and 2022 were still awarded.

This marks the second year Wei has led the Sports Day event since assuming the chairman role in June 2024. He humorously remarked on his long journey to preside over the event, hoping to improve with practice in the coming years. Wei credited the company’s remarkable sales and profits to the employees’ dedication and also acknowledged the support of their families.

Wei concluded by expressing his hope that TSMC will continue to achieve record sales and profits annually.
