Taipei: Y.P. Chyn, a leading executive at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), emphasized the lack of "shortcuts" to achieving excellence in chipmaking while being honored with one of Taiwan's most prestigious industrial technology awards.

According to Focus Taiwan, Chyn, who serves as the executive vice president and co-chief operating officer of TSMC, made these remarks during a ceremony in Hsinchu where he was inducted as an Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) laureate. Reflecting on nearly four decades in the semiconductor industry, Chyn stated, "For nearly 40 years, I have always believed there are no shortcuts to excellence in semiconductor manufacturing and technology research and development."

Chyn highlighted his collaborative efforts with TSMC's operations teams to overcome numerous technical challenges, converting advanced manufacturing technologies into mass-production capabilities that have propelled global technological innovation. He shared insights from his career journey, noting his initial role at ITRI's Electronics Research and Service Organization after graduating from National Cheng Kung University in 1982. This period, he said, "laid the foundation for my semiconductor career," before he joined the newly established TSMC in 1987 as one of its early employees.

Reflecting on Taiwan's semiconductor industry evolution, Chyn referred to it as a "Taiwan miracle," acknowledging the critical role of the government-backed ITRI in this transformation. He credited ITRI's talent cultivation and personnel transfer efforts with laying the "talent foundation" for TSMC's success and Taiwan's emergence as a global semiconductor leader.

Chyn expressed gratitude towards TSMC founder Morris Chang for pioneering the foundry business model, describing it as "a business model that changed the world." He also thanked Chairman and CEO C.C. Wei, former Chairman Mark Liu, his colleagues, and his family for their support.

President Lai Ching-te, who presented the laureate certificate to Chyn, praised his leadership in achieving yield breakthroughs in processes ranging from 28 nanometers to 2 nanometers, reinforcing TSMC's dominance in advanced manufacturing. Lai noted that Chyn's contributions have helped Taiwan maintain a central role in the global supply chain during the era of AI and high-performance computing.

In addition to Chyn, Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Chairman Chiu Sun-chien and Taipei Veterans General Hospital Superintendent Chen Wei-ming were also honored as ITRI laureates at the same event.
