Typhoon Champi Downgraded, Land Warning Lifted in Taiwan

Taipei:The Central Weather Administration (CWA) has lifted its land warning for Typhoon Champi, which has been downgraded to a tropical storm. This decision came as the weather system continues to move further away from Taiwan.

According to Focus Taiwan, the CWA removed the land warning at 230 p.m. on Saturday, earlier than initially expected. The CWA had anticipated lifting the warning in the evening after the storm showed signs of weakening and its radius began to shrink.

The CWA also mentioned that a sea warning for the storm is expected to be lifted by Saturday evening or night. As of 2 p.m. on Saturday, Champi was located about 260 kilometers northeast of Taipei, moving north-northeast to northeast at speeds of 18-21 kilometers per hour, with maximum sustained winds of 108 kph and gusts up to 137 kph.

According to Central Emergency Operations Center (CEOC), the storm has resulted in one fatality and 527 injuries in Taiwan as of Saturday morning. The fatality occurred in Liuqiu Township, Pingtung County, where a man was swept away by waves on Thursday. Most of the injuries were reported in Taipei and Taichung cities, primarily caused by downed trees, falling electricity cables and billboards, and damaged water pipes.
