Typhoon Champi Forces Further Delay of Taiwan Series Game 5

Taipei:Game 5 of the Taiwan Series has been postponed for a second time due to Typhoon Champi. This delay provides the CTBC Brothers' pitchers additional rest as they aim to avoid elimination in the series.

According to Focus Taiwan, the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) has rescheduled the game to Sunday at 505 p.m., following the announcement of school and office closures in Taipei for Friday and Saturday. The game was initially planned for Friday and then moved to Saturday before this latest postponement.

The Wei Chuan Dragons currently lead the best-of-seven series 3-1. If necessary, Game 6 will occur on Monday at 305 p.m., with Game 7 scheduled for Tuesday at 635 p.m. All games were originally set for Taipei Dome, but due to a scheduling conflict, a potential Game 7 will need a new venue, which has not yet been announced. Wei Chuan will be the home team for the remaining games.

Before the postponement was confirmed, the Brothers had already decided to replace their Game 5 starting pitcher Wu Li-chen with Félix Peña. The delay has allowed Peña, who started Game 2 last Sunday, additional recovery time. Peña pitched 4 2/3 innings in Game 2 and later contributed to a win in Game 4 by pitching a scoreless 11th inning.

The postponements also benefit Brothers' pitcher Mario Sanchez, who has been heavily utilized in Games 1 and 4. Sanchez pitched seven innings in the series opener and added another 73 pitches in Game 4, without allowing a run in his second outing.

CTBC's victory in Game 4 staved off a sweep after the team's offense struggled, managing only one run in the first three games, including two shutouts. Unless there are further changes to the pitching lineup, Sunday's Game 5 will see Peña face off against Wei Chuan's John Gant, who delivered eight scoreless innings in the first game of the series.
