Taipei: Typhoon Danas, which swept through Taiwan late Sunday and Monday morning, has resulted in two fatalities, 708 injuries, and 8,040 incidents involving infrastructure damage and falling trees, as reported by the Central Emergency Operations Center (CEOC) on Wednesday.
According to Focus Taiwan, over 75 percent of these incidents were reported in Tainan and Chiayi County and City in southern Taiwan. Specifically, Tainan accounted for 4,349 incidents, Chiayi City for 1,644, and Chiayi County for 815.
The fatalities and the highest number of typhoon-related injuries were reported in Tainan, with 286 injured, followed by Chiayi City with 173 injuries and Chiayi County with 150 injuries, as detailed in the CEOC report.
The typhoon also caused significant power disruptions, with over 880,000 households experiencing outages at its peak. As of Wednesday morning, 72,882 households remained without power, according to the CEOC.
Telecommunications were also affected, with 12,258 landline users experiencing service disruptions. Of these, 1,192 users were still awaiting service restoration, and 1,367 telecom base stations were damaged, with 430 still undergoing repairs.
The agricultural sector suffered considerable losses, with the latest estimates rising to NT$1.46 billion. Chiayi County was the hardest hit, with losses amounting to NT$585.46 million, followed by Tainan at NT$469.8 million and Yunlin County at NT$271.55 million. Pomelos were the most affected crop, with losses reaching NT$209.98 million, alongside bananas, bamboo shoots, oranges, and tangerines.
Additionally, around 703 tourists were reported stranded in the outlying Matsu Islands as of Tuesday, as mentioned by the CEOC.
By 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, a total of 3,780 people had been evacuated from 11 cities and counties. Taiwan had opened 11 shelters, accommodating approximately 68 people, as reported by the CEOC.
