Wanted Malaysian singer arrested at Taipei hotel on drug charges

A Malaysian singer, who was on Taiwan’s wanted list for drug possession and other offenses, has been arrested at a Taipei hotel, police said Saturday.

Police found the singer on June 30, after the hotel reported that the photo on the ID he had presented did not match his face and that he had not been paying his accommodation bill, according to the Zhongshan police precinct.

When the police went to the hotel to investigate, they interviewed the man in his room, looked him up in their data system, and found that a court in Taiwan has issued a warrant for his arrest on drug charges and other offenses, the precinct said.

He was identified as 31-year-old Malaysian singer and songwriter Jyn Chiu (???), who has several mandopop albums to his name, according to the police.

A search of his room, which police requested, turned up two sachets of amphetamines and a narcotics inhaler, which he denied belonged to him, the Zhongshan precinct said.

The police said they also found that the singer had overstayed his Taiwan visa and had indeed presented false ID to the hotel.

The man was arrested, and the case has been handed over to the Taipei District Prosecutors Office for investigation of suspected drug offenses, the police said.
