Weather bureau raises extreme torrential rain alert for part of Yilan

An extreme torrential rain warning has been issued for mountainous areas in Yilan County, northeastern Taiwan, by the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) on Monday morning, indicating those places could receive over 500 millimeters of rain within the next 24 hours.

As of 10:30 a.m. Monday, Ximao Shan (Mt. Ximao) on the border between Su’ao and Nan’ao townships in Yilan had already received 416 mm of rain, while 269 mm to 300 mm of rain had fallen in parts of Dongshan Township, CWB data showed.

Strengthening northeasterly winds and the peripheral effects of Tropical Storm Nalgae mean that parts of Taiwan are prone to sudden heavy rain on Monday, the CWB said.

It issued a torrential rain warning to people in low-lying areas in Yilan and hilly areas in Taipei, which indicates that rainfall is expected to exceed 350 mm within 24 hours, or 200 mm within three hours.

The weather bureau also issued heavy rain or extreme heavy rain warnings for Keelung North Coast area, Taipei, New Taipei, Hualien County, and Taitung County’s Lanyu (Orchid) and Ludao (Green) islands.

There could also be heavy rain in mountainous areas north of Taichung and in Pingtung County’s Hengchun Peninsula in the south, the CWB said, warning about possible landslides and river flooding in those areas.

According to the CWB, as of 2 a.m. Monday, Tropical Storm Nalgae was about 790 kilometers southwest of Taiwan’s southernmost tip Eluanbi, and was moving northwest to waters near Pratas Island in the South China Sea.
