Yushan Experiences Rare Snowfall Before Temperature Rise

Taipei: Snow fell on Yushan, Taiwan's highest mountain, at 5:55 p.m. on Saturday, accumulating to about 2 centimeters by early Sunday, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA). The snowfall transitioned to sleet and ceased by Sunday morning.

According to Focus Taiwan, the CWA projected a rise in temperatures across Taiwan on Sunday. At the Yushan Weather Station, temperatures were expected to increase from 0.1-1 degrees Celsius during the snowfall to 4-5 degrees by the morning. In the northern and eastern regions, highs were anticipated to reach 25-27 degrees, while central and southern Taiwan could see temperatures of 29-30 degrees. Lows across the island were predicted to stay between 18-21 degrees.

The CWA also indicated a reduction in rainfall throughout the day, with potential sporadic showers across Taiwan and localized thundershowers in the southern areas. Independent meteorologist Wu Der-rong forecasted warm conditions for Monday, with localized showers in the northern and central regions, and cloudy to sunny weather elsewhere.

Wu anticipated an incoming weather front on Tuesday, which might bring showers or thunderstorms to northern Taiwan, along with strong winds and sudden heavy rainfall. Southern mountainous regions could experience sporadic showers. As the front weakens on Wednesday, the weather is expected to turn cloudy to sunny, with predominantly sunny skies persisting through the week. Wu did not provide specific temperature forecasts for the upcoming week.
