3.3 degrees Celsius recorded in Taiwan’s Nantou on Sunday

Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau (CWB) recorded a temperature as low as 3.3 degrees Celsius in Zhongliao Township, Nantou County, early Sunday morning, the lowest in low-lying areas on Taiwan proper, amid an ongoing cold spell.

Also being hit by temperatures below 5 degrees early Sunday morning were Yunlin County’s Dounan Township, where lows dropped to 3.5 degrees, and Taipei’s Beitou District, which recorded 4.9 degrees, according to CWB data.

The weather bureau continued to release cold surge advisories to several cities and counties around Taiwan, including a warning for Miaoli and Nantou counties where the temperature is forecast to drop below 6 degrees from Sunday morning to Monday morning.

A cold surge advisory was also issued for New Taipei where the mercury would remain at or below 10 degrees for 24 hours.

In addition, a cold alert was issued for Keelung, Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu City and County in northern Taiwan; Taichung and Changhua County in central Taiwan; Yunlin, Chiayi City and County, Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung in the south; and Yilan and Hualien in the east, as well as the outlying county of Kinmen.

The temperatures in those areas could drop below 10 degrees during the Sunday-Monday period, according to the CWB.

On Sunday, highs are expected to range between 15-17 degrees in northern Taiwan, and 19-22 degrees in other areas, the CWB forecast, warning of a big temperature gap in central and southern Taiwan due to the cold spell.

Meanwhile, independent meteorologist Wu Der-rong (???) forecast warmer weather from Monday but with a big temperature difference between the daytime and nighttime.
