38-degree heat forecast for Hualien, Taitung Sunday

Cloudy to sunny weather with scorching heat is forecast across Taiwan on Sunday, with the possibility of intermittent showers in the southeast and Hengchun Peninsula in the south, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The bureau also forecast intermittent afternoon thunder showers in western Taiwan and in mountainous areas around the island, reminding people in the central and southern regions to be aware of possible sporadic heavy rain.

Daytime highs are expected to reach 33-35 degrees Celsius nationwide, with the Greater Taipei area, Yilan, Hualien, Taitung, Kaohsiung, and parts of Pingtung likely to see temperatures higher than 36 degrees, the CWB said.

The mercury could rise to 38 degrees in Hualien and Taitung counties, the CWB added.

The weather bureau reminded people participating in outdoor activities, especially around noon, to stay hydrated and take precautions to avoid sunburn.

In addition, the CWB said high tides with the potential to cause localized flooding were expected in coastal areas north of Taoyuan and south of Chiayi.
