Taipei: The Executive Yuan has announced the nomination of four new individuals to serve as commissioners of the National Communications Commission (NCC), pending legislative approval. The announcement was made during a news conference where Cabinet spokesperson Michelle Lee expressed optimism that the Legislative Yuan would expedite the review process to ensure continued smooth operations at the NCC.
According to Focus Taiwan, the nominees include Chiang Jung-hsien, Cherng Ming-shiou, Huang Wei-wei, and Lo Huei-wen, who bring a range of expertise in information technology, law, and communications. Chiang is set to become the commission’s new chief, with Cherng serving as the vice chairperson.
Chiang, a professor at National Cheng Kung University’s Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, specializes in artificial intelligence, information security, healthcare, and big data analysis. Notably, he is not affiliated with any political party. Conversely, Cherng, a law professor at Soochow University, focuses on economic administrative law, regulatory theory, constitutional litigation, and information rights. He is affiliated with the Kuomintang (KMT).
The Cabinet also highlighted the expertise of Huang and Lo, the two female nominees who are nonpartisan. They currently teach at National Chengchi University and Shih Hsin University, respectively, and share expertise in the field of communications.
The NCC, an independent statutory agency under the Executive Yuan, is tasked with regulating the development of Taiwan’s telecommunication and broadcasting industries, promoting competition and consumer protection, and overseeing licensing, radio frequency and spectrum, programming content, and communications standards and specifications. Presently, the seven-member NCC comprises only three commissioners: Chen Chung-shu, the acting chairperson, Wang Jiang-jia, and Wang Yi-hui.
