Taipei: A Canadian patrol frigate transited the Taiwan Strait on Sunday, marking the first such instance this year, according to Taiwanese authorities. The frigate, identified as the Halifax-class vessel Ottawa, sailed from the south to the north through the strategic waterway.
According to Focus Taiwan, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) stated that it closely monitored the surrounding airspace and waters during the transit and took appropriate measures in response. This operation highlights ongoing vigilance in the region amid concerns over maritime security.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Taiwan confirmed that this transit is the first by a Canadian vessel in 2023 and represents the sixth passage involving Canada since the country announced its Indo-Pacific Strategy in November 2022. MOFA emphasized that this move underscores Canada’s commitment to maintaining peace and freedom in the strait, which is recognized as international waters.
As of press time, there has been no response from the Royal Canadian Navy or the People’s Liberation Army regarding the transit. The situation remains under observation as regional dynamics continue to evolve.
