Taipei: A U.K. parliamentary delegation, led by Sarah Champion, co-chair of the British-Taiwanese All-Party Parliamentary Group, is in Taiwan to meet with President Lai Ching-te, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced.
According to Focus Taiwan, the seven-member cross-party delegation will also meet with former President Tsai Ing-wen during their visit from February 15 to 22. In addition to these high-profile meetings, the delegation will attend banquets hosted by Joseph Wu, Secretary-General of the National Security Council, and Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung.
Deputy Legislative Speaker Johnny Chiang and Environment Minister Peng Chi-ming are also scheduled to meet the U.K. parliamentarians. Discussions will focus on Taiwan’s political and economic landscape, the Taiwan-U.K. bilateral relationship, and regional security.
Beyond political meetings, the delegation will travel to Hsinchu City to visit the Taiwan Space Agency and Asia UAV AI Innovation Application R and D Center in Chiayi County. MOFA has referred to Champion as a consistent ally of Taiwan, highlighting her advocacy for attention to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
Champion has previously voiced support for Taiwan in the U.K. House of Commons, particularly regarding Taiwan’s international status. She pointed out that UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 does not explicitly mention Taiwan or exclude its participation in international organizations.
