Cold Surge Warning Issued for 21 Taiwanese Regions Amid Temperature Drop

Taipei: The Central Weather Administration (CWA) has issued cold-surge advisories for 21 cities and counties across Taiwan, warning of potential lows dropping below 10 degrees Celsius from Sunday through Monday morning. According to Focus Taiwan, an "orange" alert was announced for Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Taichung, Keelung, and Hsinchu, indicating sustained temperatures around or below 10 degrees Celsius, with possibilities of plunging below 6 degrees in some parts. This alert also extends to Hsinchu, Miaoli, Changhua, and Yilan counties, as well as certain outlying islands in Kinmen and Lienchiang (Matsu) counties. Meanwhile, a "yellow" warning for minimum temperatures dropping below 10 degrees was issued for the rest of the country, excluding the offshore Penghu County. The CWA attributes the cold weather to a lingering cold front, with areas north of Taichung experiencing average temperatures below 10 degrees early Sunday. Taoyuan's Yangmei District and New Taipei's Shimen District recorded the low est temperature at 8.3 degrees. Independent meteorologist Wu De-rong predicted that between Sunday night and Monday morning, Taipei's weather station could see temperatures dip to 10 degrees, with low-lying areas on Taiwan's mainland potentially dropping below 6 degrees. Wu further forecasted that early Tuesday and Wednesday will remain cold across Taiwan, with similar lows expected in some low-lying regions. However, Wu indicated that the cold front would weaken on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, leading to more comfortable daytime temperatures. A gradual rise in temperatures is expected by Thursday, with pleasant weather conditions anticipated to persist from Friday through the following Tuesday, though significant temperature differences between day and night are possible.
