Cool, damp weather forecast for northern Taiwan on Sunday

Seasonal northeasterly winds will bring cooler temperatures and a chance of rain to northern Taiwan on Sunday, although drier conditions are expected to prevail as the week begins, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The CWB said areas above Taoyuan in the north and along the east coast could see scattered rain showers on Sunday, with a possibility of localized heavy rain on the northeast coast and in mountainous areas in Greater Taipei.

Temperatures, meanwhile, are expected to top out at around 24 degrees Celsius in northern Taiwan, with overnight lows dropping to 21 degrees, according to the bureau.

In other regions, daytime highs will rise to 27-31 degrees, before temperatures cool down noticeably to 23-24 degrees in the evening, the weather bureau said.

From Monday through Wednesday, Taiwan’s weather will take a turn for the better, with cloudy to sunny skies and no rain forecast for most areas nationwide, according to meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮).

During that three-day period, temperatures could drop as low as 17 degrees during the early morning hours, before rebounding slightly on Wednesday and Thursday, said Wu, adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University.

Meanwhile, good air quality was forecast for most regions of Taiwan on Sunday, with the exception of areas south of Yunlin County on the west coast, where “moderate” air quality was expected due to PM2.5 pollution, according to the Environmental Protection Administration.
