Taiwan reported 10,659 new COVID-19 infections on Monday, all but 76 of which were locally transmitted, and 41 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The 10,583 new domestic cases on Monday represented a 12-percent drop from a week earlier, the CECC data indicated.
The deceased ranged in age from their 30s to their 90s, and all but five had underlying health issues, while 15 of them were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.
Moderate and Severe Cases
Also on Monday, the CECC reported 38 new COVID-19 cases classified as moderate and 33 as severe, including three cases of children aged 12 or under.
Among the three severe child infections were two cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), which involved an unvaccinated 3-year-old boy with no health condition and one 3-year-old girl with cardiovascular diseases who had got one vaccine jab, the CECC stated.
While the boy was discharged from hospital on Nov. 21, the girl is now in stable condition in an intensive care unit, the CECC added.
The CECC said the other young case was a 7-year-old boy with two jabs and had congenital heart and muscle diseases, who has been transferred from an emergency ward to a general ward after treatment.
So far, over 90 percent of the reported COVID-19 infections have underlying health issues, and 66 percent of these cases have not had a booster shot, the CECC said, adding that more than 90 percent of the overall cases are aged 60 or above.
Regional breakdown
Regionally, New Taipei had the highest number of new infections with 1,584, followed by Taichung with 1,441 and Taoyuan with 1,269.
Kaohsiung reported 1,252 cases, Taipei 885, Tainan 881, Changhua County 669, Hsinchu County 384, Pingtung County 348, Miaoli County 289, Yunlin County 252 and Hsinchu City 251.
Nantou County had 198 cases, Hualien County 173, Yilan County 171, Chiayi County 169, Keelung 128, Chiayi City 98, Taitung County 70, Kinmen County 41, Penghu County 27 and the Matsu Islands three, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 8,278,371 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 37,615 classified as imported.
With the 41 deaths reported Monday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 14,276.
