Taiwan on Monday reported 14,234 new COVID-19 infections and 14 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The new cases represented a 37.3-percent increase from the same day a week earlier, CECC data showed.

The deceased ranged in age from their 50s to their 90s. All had underlying health conditions, while seven of them were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.

Also on Monday, the CECC reported 16 new cases classified as moderate and 15 as severe.

Of the 8,645,300 local infections recorded this year, 22,784 have been classified as moderate and 16,707 as severe, accounting for 0.26 percent and 0.19 percent, respectively, of the total, according to CECC data as of Dec. 25.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases on Monday, with 2,812, followed by Taichung with 1,827 and Taoyuan with 1,691.

Kaohsiung reported 1,451 new cases, Taipei 1,446, Tainan 1,144, Changhua 652, Hsinchu County 641, Hsinchu City 426, Miaoli 365, Pingtung 273, and Yunlin 271.

Nantou had 223 cases, Yilan 192, Keelung 174, Chiayi County 161, Hualien 143, Chiayi City 89, Kinmen 80, Taitung 54, Penghu 46 and the Matsu Islands one, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 8,713,634 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 39,514 classified as imported.

With the 14 deaths reported on Monday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 15,113.
