CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports 19,861 new COVID-19 cases, 65 deaths

Taiwan reported 19,861 new cases of COVID-19 and 65 deaths from the disease on Wednesday, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

Of the cases recorded, 19,505 were domestic, which represented an 18.4-percent decline from the same day the previous week, the CECC said.

The CECC said that all but two of the deaths reported Wednesday involved individuals with underlying health conditions, while 35 of those who died were unvaccinated.

The deceased ranged in age from under five years old to over 90 years old, according to the CECC.

Also on Wednesday, the CECC reported 147 new COVID-19 cases classified as moderate and 13 as severe.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases with 3,734, followed by Taoyuan with 2,507 and Taichung with 2,440.

Kaohsiung reported 2,155 cases, Taipei 1,830, Tainan 1,595, Changhua 840, Hsinchu County 542, Pingtung 542, Hsinchu City 486, Miaoli 453, Yunlin 449, Hualien 345, Keelung 343, and Yilan 337.

Nantou had 307 cases, Chiayi County 229, Chiayi City 174, Taitung 128, Kinmen 40, Penghu 25, and the Matsu Islands 4.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 9,862,108 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 52,690 classified as imported.

With the 65 deaths reported on Wednesday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 17,258.
