CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports 21,092 new COVID-19 cases, 22 deaths

Taiwan on Sunday reported 21,092 cases of COVID-19, all but 290 which were domestic infections, and 22 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The deceased ranged in age from their 40s to their 90s. All but one suffered from chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, and 12 were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.

Also on Sunday, the CECC reported 26 severe COVID-19 cases and 79 moderate infections.

Of the 4,830,080 domestic cases reported in Taiwan this year, 9,953 have been classified as severe infections and 12,390 as moderate, accounting for 0.21 percent and 0.26 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of Aug. 13.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases on Sunday, with 4,312, followed by Taichung with 2,473 and Taipei with 2,432.

Taoyuan had 2,324 new cases, Kaohsiung 1,731, Tainan 1,394, Changhua 897, Hsinchu County 566, Yunlin 541, Miaoli 535, Hsinchu City 516, Yilan 500, Pingtung 474 and Keelung 396.

Hualien reported 359 cases, Nantou 318, Chiayi County 313, Penghu 208, Chiayi City 195, Taitung 174, Kinmen 136, and the Matsu Islands 8, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 4,888,840 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 4,865,470 domestic infections.

With the 22 deaths reported Sunday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 9,435.
