CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports 24,974 new COVID-19 cases, 15 deaths

Taiwan on Tuesday reported 24,974 new COVID-19 infections and 15 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The 15 deaths reported Tuesday were the lowest daily figure since May 11, while the number of new cases represented a 27.2 percent drop from a week earlier, the CECC said.

The deceased ranged in age from their 40s to their 90s. All but one of them had underlying health issues, and seven were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.

Meanwhile, the CECC reported 33 new moderate and severe COVID-19 infections, the lowest total since May 3.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, Kaohsiung reported the highest number of new cases on Tuesday, with 3,734, followed by New Taipei with 3,722 and Taichung with 3,552.

Tainan reported 2,541 cases, Taoyuan 2,166, Taipei 2,107, Changhua 1,292, Pingtung 929, Yunlin 701, Chiayi County 567, Hsinchu County 555 and Miaoli 546.

Hsinchu City had 493 cases, Nantou 477, Chiayi City 380, Yilan 357, Keelung 255, Hualien 239, Taitung 155, Kinmen 94, Penghu 50 and the Matsu Islands 23, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 7,929,052 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 36,720 classified as imported.

With the 15 deaths reported on Tuesday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 13,247.
