CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan sees 2nd day of no new domestic COVID-19 cases

Taiwan on Saturday recorded six new imported cases of COVID-19 but no new domestic transmissions for the second straight day and no deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

At a press briefing, however, Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung (???) said the CECC learned Saturday morning of a new domestic COVID-19 case that has been confirmed in New Taipei, which will be included in Sunday’s figures.

Of the six new imported cases, four involved Taiwanese nationals who recently returned from France, the United States, Vietnam and Cambodia, Chen said, while the two others were citizens of the Philippines and Pakistan.

According to the CECC, the six all tested positive for COVID-19 upon arrival at the airport or during their mandatory 14-day quarantine.

The new cases bring the total in Taiwan to 15,960, of which 14,345 are domestic infections reported since May 15, when the country first recorded more than 100 COVID-19 cases in a single day.

No deaths from the disease were reported on Saturday.

However, Chen said the CECC also learned from New Taipei authorities Saturday morning of a container vessel captain who recently died from a fever.

The CECC is still looking into the case to determine whether or not it was related to COVID-19, Chen said.
