Taipei: Deputy Taipei Mayor Lee Shu-chuan announced his resignation from his current position, indicating his intention to run for the Kuomintang (KMT) in the upcoming New Taipei mayoral election scheduled for November. Lee stated that he would vacate his post by the end of the month.
According to Focus Taiwan, Lee emphasized “public expectations” and shared that opinion polls reflect strong support for his candidacy. He plans to return to New Taipei, where he is a registered resident, to prepare for the next phase of his political career. Lee has previously held significant roles, such as Executive Yuan secretary-general and deputy mayor in three of Taiwan’s six special municipalities, but he noted that he has not yet had the opportunity to directly implement his own vision for city governance.
Lee also extended a proposal for cooperation with the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) in New Taipei for the election on November 26. However, this suggestion was not immediately accepted by TPP candidate Huang Kuo-chang. Huang, who is the chairman of the TPP, expressed his anticipation for a “constructive and mutually motivating contest” if Lee decides to run, acknowledging him as a respected and experienced figure in public service.
Lee’s resignation is set to take effect by the end of February.
