DPP Secretary-General Resigns After Recall Campaign Setback

Taipei: Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Secretary-General Lin Yu-chang announced his resignation on Monday following the unsuccessful legislative recall campaign supported by his party over the recent weekend.

According to Focus Taiwan, Lin revealed on his Facebook account that he had submitted his resignation to President Lai Ching-te, who also serves as the DPP chairman, on Sunday. Lin, holding the position of the ruling party's secretary-general, stated his accountability for any shortcomings and the inability to meet the expectations of both society and party supporters.

Lin expressed his admiration for the recall campaign volunteers, acknowledging their commitment to Taiwan. He emphasized the importance of not making excuses for the outcome but instead focusing on moving forward amidst various challenges, urging continued efforts to defend Taiwan.

The announcement followed the survival of all 24 lawmakers from the main opposition Kuomintang (KMT) who were subject to recall votes on Saturday. This outcome ensured that the KMT, along with lawmakers from the Taiwan People's Party, would maintain opposition control of the Legislature.

As of the latest reports, President Lai had not yet accepted Lin's resignation formally.
