Eastern Taiwan prone to sporadic showers on Sunday: weather bureau

Eastern areas in Taiwan will be prone to occasional showers on Sunday as the peripheral clouds of tropical storm Omais approaches the island, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) forecast.

While rain in the east will be mainly caused by heat convection in the afternoon, the weather will be mostly cloudy in the west, with sporadic afternoon thundershowers which are more likely to occur in mountains and low-lying areas nearby, according to the weather bureau.

Temperature-wise, daytime highs of 31-34 degrees Celsius are forecast throughout Taiwan on Sunday, and people engaged in outdoor activities are warned to take precautions against dehydration around noon when it will be muggier than during other parts of the day.

The CWB pointed out that tropical storm Omais was located 600 kilometers east northeast of Eluanbi, Taiwan’s southernmost tip, at 5 a.m. Sunday, and was moving in a north northwesterly direction.

The storm will be moving toward Japan and Korea after passing the seas west of the Ryukyu Islands, so it is unlikely to pose a direct impact on Taiwan, the CWB projected.
