ELECTIONS 2022/Chiayi City voters urged to show up for mayoral election

Candidates on Sunday morning called on eligible voters in Chiayi City to go to the polling stations to elect their next mayor despite the chilly weather as a cold spell grips Taiwan.

Update: Polls closed at 4 p.m. in the rescheduled mayoral election in Chiayi City on Sunday.

5:15 p.m.: Incumbent Huang Min-hui of the Kuomintang declares victory in her run for re-election.

Huang Min-hui (???) of the Kuomintang, who is seeking re-election, and her Democratic Progressive Party challenger Lee Chun-yi (???) both urged voters to bundle themselves up and head to the polling stations, after they cast their ballot at two different polling stations.

The Chiayi City mayoral election was rescheduled from Nov. 26 to Sunday following the death of 72-year-old independent candidate Huang Shao-tsung (???) on Nov. 2.

Huang Min-hui told reporters that she worries about a possible low turnout because of the cold weather.

The temperature in Chiayi fell to 10 degrees Sunday morning. At the Chen’an Temple and Wenya Elementary School voting stations where Huang and Lee cast their ballot, respectively, only a handful of people showed up after voting began at 8 a.m.

Voting will end at 4 p.m.

According to the Chiayi City Election Commission, there are 214,130 eligible voters and five candidates in this election.
