Taipei: Former Interior Minister Hsu Kuo-yung has been selected as the next secretary-general of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), a source familiar with the matter confirmed to CNA Tuesday. Hsu will take over the position from Lin Yu-chang, who resigned after the failure of a mass legislative recall campaign on July 26, supported by the DPP and initiated by civic groups.
According to Focus Taiwan, all 24 lawmakers of the main opposition Kuomintang (KMT) who were on the recall ballot survived the unprecedented vote. This outcome ensures that the KMT, along with the opposition Taiwan People’s Party, will maintain control of the Legislature.
Local media reports indicate that President Lai Ching-te, who also serves as the chairman of the DPP, is expected to announce Hsu’s appointment following the second round of recall votes aimed at another seven KMT legislators on August 23.
