Former First Lady Wu Shu-jen Discharged from Tainan Hospital

Taipei: Former first lady Wu Shu-jen, the wife of former President Chen Shui-bian, was discharged from a Tainan hospital on Monday morning. She had been admitted a few days earlier after collapsing at her residence.

According to Focus Taiwan, the Sin-Lau Hospital confirmed that Wu has returned home for recuperation after her family completed the necessary procedures. Wu, who is 73, reportedly collapsed on the afternoon of August 15, as noted by the Tainan City Government Fire Bureau. The bureau reported that she had no pulse and was not breathing at the time of collapse. Emergency first aid instructions were provided over the phone by a call handler, while paramedics and an ambulance were dispatched to the scene. Wu was resuscitated on her way to the hospital and was conscious upon arrival.

Wu and Chen's son, Chen Chih-chung, elaborated in a Facebook post on August 16 that postural hypotension is a serious and potentially fatal complication for individuals with spinal cord injuries. Wu has been using a wheelchair since a 1985 accident at a post-election event for her husband, which left her paralyzed from the waist down.

In 2011, Wu was sentenced to a total of 17 years and six months in prison and fined NT$154 million (US$5.13 million) for corruption. However, she was deemed unfit for incarceration due to her health issues. Additionally, she was sentenced to two years in a separate money laundering case, which was remanded by the Supreme Court for retrial. During the third trial, her lawyer successfully appealed for a suspension of proceedings on health grounds, which the High Court granted in 2024.
