Fugitive Taiwanese Blogger Returns After Six Years in Canada on Fraud Charges

Taipei: Famous Taiwanese blogger Lady Nai Nai, real name Su Chen Tuan, was repatriated to Taiwan on Thursday after being on the run in Canada for over six years. She was wanted for alleged fraud.

According to Focus Taiwan, Su Chen Tuan was escorted on a flight from Canada by a legal secretary from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Taiwan’s de facto representative office in Canada. Upon her arrival at Taoyuan International Airport at 5 a.m., she was met by a crowd of reporters but refrained from making any comments. She was subsequently transferred to the Taipei District Prosecutors Office at 1:18 p.m.

Su had been evading authorities since 2019 after being listed as wanted for suspected fraud. The allegations stemmed from the abrupt closure of a cosmetic clinic in Taiwan in 2018, which she ran with her ex-boyfriend Huang Po-chien. The closure left unresolved solvency issues, including debts. The couple, along with Huang’s parents, fled to Canada, where they sought political asylum but were unsuccessful.

According to the Investigation Bureau, its legal secretaries in the United States and Canada collaborated with Taiwan’s representative offices in Ottawa and Toronto to pursue the case. The four suspects eventually contacted Taiwan’s representative offices in Canada, leading to their arrest in May 2024. Huang Lin was released without bail, while Huang Li-hsiung was released on a bail of NT$500,000 and remains under investigation.

In a recent letter to the media, Su Chen expressed her willingness to return to Taiwan to cooperate with the investigation, asserting she did not partake in any illegal activities related to the clinic. Su Chen gained fame in the early 2000s through her blog “Lady Nai Nai,” which chronicled her love story with Huang Po-chien and shared personal reflections, amassing over 46 million views before its closure in 2013. Her Facebook page had over 300,000 followers by 2017.
