Heat alerts issued for parts of northern, eastern Taiwan

Heat alerts have been issued for some areas of northern and eastern Taiwan on Sunday, with temperatures expected to top out at 36 degrees Celsius, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

A “yellow” heat alert was issued for Taipei and New Taipei, while an “orange” alert has been issued for Taitung County in the southeast, the CWB said.

According to the CWB’s three-level heat advisory system, an orange warning points to temperatures reaching 36 degrees for three days in a row, while a yellow alert refers to a one-day high of 36 degrees.

Elsewhere, daytime highs will reach 31-33 degrees on Sunday, with a chance of afternoon showers or thunderstorms in Greater Taipei, the northeast and mountainous regions, the CWB said.

The bureau also issued a dense fog advisory for Kinmen, citing visibility of less than 200 meters, and warned of the potential for strong wind gusts on Orchid Island, Green Island and the Matsu Islands.

In the coming week, hot, sunny conditions are expected to continue to prevail due to an intensifying Pacific high-pressure system, which could drive daily high temperatures up to 35-36 degrees, according to meteorologist Wu Der-rong (???).

As the system settles in over Taiwan, most regions will be more likely to see increased cloud cover during the afternoon hours, rather than rain showers or thunderstorms, said Wu, an adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University.

On Saturday, weather stations in Taitung, Taipei and Kaohsiung all recorded temperatures above 36 degrees, while Hualien, New Taipei and Tainan saw temperatures of at least 35 degrees, CWB data shows.
