Intermittent rain forecast as low-pressure system approaches Taiwan

An approaching low-pressure system will bring intermittent rain to much of Taiwan on Sunday, with high temperatures forecast to reach 33-36 degrees Celsius, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The bureau said central and southern Taiwan could see scattered rain or thundershowers throughout the day, while mostly cloudy to sunny skies with a chance of afternoon rain showers are forecast for other regions.

In terms of temperature, highs of 33-36 degrees are expected nationwide, while areas north of Hsinchu, as well as Changhua, Yunlin and the east coast could see highs rise above 36 degrees, the CWB said.

Meanwhile, the bureau cautioned that the ultraviolet (UV) index, which measures UV radiation that can damage the skin and eyes, is forecast to reach “high” to “extremely high” levels of 9-11 throughout Taiwan on Sunday, particularly around noontime.

The week ahead

Wu Der-rong (???), an adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University, said the wet conditions will continue into Monday before peaking on Tuesday, when the current low-pressure system, known as a monsoon gyre, will pass over Taiwan from the east.

As the system moves away from Taiwan, there will continue to be a chance of heavy rain or thundershowers on Wednesday and Thursday, Wu said.

Beginning on Friday, a developing Pacific high-pressure system will bring clearer weather to the island, though afternoon rain showers will remain a possibility, he said.
