Low pressure system to bring rain to Taiwan: CWB

Low pressure conditions are forecast to bring intermittent rain across Taiwan on Saturday, with chances of brief afternoon thundershowers in some regions, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The bureau said northern, northeastern and eastern Taiwan could see intermittent rain throughout the day, while other regions will get showers or storms mainly during the afternoon.

Temperature-wise, highs of 32-35 degrees Celsius can be expected nationwide, while Kaohsiung and Pingtung in the south, as well as Taitung and the Hualien section of the East Rift Valley in eastern Taiwan could see highs reach 36 degrees, the CWB said.

Wu Der-rong (???), an adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University, said the wet weather can be expected across Taiwan over the next couple of days due to a large cyclonic circulation known as monsoon gyre that is currently sitting east of Taiwan.

Also, due to convection effects, which is the movement of heat and moisture in the atmosphere, Wu said, there is a possibility of thundershowers or heavy rain in mountainous regions and some low-lying areas around Taiwan on Saturday and Sunday.

On Monday and Tuesday, chances of thunderstorms and heavy rain can be expected as the monsoon gyre passes through the country, the meteorologist said.

However, the monsoon gyre will begin to disperse and weaken in the following two days, he added.

Under the influence of a developing Pacific high-pressure system, the wet weather will ease starting Friday, although afternoon showers can still be expected in some parts of the island, he added.
