Magnitude 4.9 Earthquake Strikes Off Eastern Taiwan Coast


Hualien: A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck off the coast of Hualien County in eastern Taiwan at 9:26 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA). The epicenter was located in the sea about 11.7 kilometers east of Hualien County Hall, with a depth of 17.1 km, as per CWA data.

According to Focus Taiwan, there were no immediate reports of damage following the earthquake. The intensity of the quake, which measures the actual effects of a tremor, was highest in parts of Hualien County, including Hualien City, where it registered a 4 on Taiwan’s seven-tier intensity scale.

The quake’s intensity measured 3 in Yilan County and 2 in Nantou County.
