Chiayi: A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Chiayi County in southern Taiwan at 4:37 p.m. Thursday.
According to Focus Taiwan, the epicenter was located about 36.3 kilometers southeast of Chiayi County Hall, at a depth of 10.4 kilometers. CWA data indicated there were no immediate reports of damage from the earthquake.
The earthquake’s intensity, which measures the actual effects of a temblor, was recorded highest in parts of Chiayi County, Tainan, and Kaohsiung, where it measured 4 on Taiwan’s seven-tier intensity scale. In Chiayi City, the intensity was measured at 3, while in Pingtung, Taitung, Hualien, Changhua, Nantou, and Penghu counties, it registered an intensity of 2.
