Olympic Champion Lee Yang to Head Taiwan’s New Ministry of Sports

Taipei: Two-time Olympic gold medalist and retired Taiwanese badminton superstar Lee Yang has pledged to strengthen Taiwan's sports sector following the announcement that he will lead the nation's newly-upgraded Ministry of Sports, set to be established next month. Lee expressed his commitment to the role, highlighting the importance of enhancing sports policies and addressing athletes' needs.

According to Focus Taiwan, Lee Yang, who is 30 years old, confirmed his appointment as the incoming sports minister in a phone interview with CNA. The Executive Yuan announced his new position on Wednesday, with the Ministry of Sports scheduled to be inaugurated on September 9. Lee emphasized the significance of his new role and promised to exert maximum effort to fulfill his responsibilities.

Lee is celebrated as one of Taiwan's most successful badminton players, having secured Olympic gold medals in 2021 and 2024, as well as multiple Asian Games and Asian Championships bronzes. He retired from professional sports in December 2024. Reflecting on his unexpected transition to politics, Lee expressed his enduring commitment to advancing Taiwan's sports scene.

In addition to Lee's appointment, the Executive Yuan revealed a broader Cabinet reshuffle involving 16 officials across 10 government agencies. The reshuffle includes new ministers in economic affairs, digital affairs, and health and welfare, as part of President Lai Ching-te's efforts to address political challenges and improve public approval.

The Lai administration had previously announced plans to elevate the Sports Administration, previously under the Ministry of Education, to a standalone ministry. This move aims to foster the development of Taiwan's sports industry and promote both competitive and recreational sports.
