Vatican city: A Taiwanese baby received a "papal blessing" from Pope Leo XIV on Wednesday during a public appearance in Vatican City. The event unfolded as the Pope made his rounds on the popemobile, a moment captured by a Taiwanese Catholic delegation from Taipei's Our Lady of SongShan Catholic Church. According to Focus Taiwan, the blessing was shared on the social media platform Threads by Ya Shieng Lin, a member of the Taiwanese Catholic community. Lin's post detailed how the chance encounter occurred as the Bishop of Rome passed by the Taiwanese delegation, prompting a member of the church to present the baby to the Pope. The Pope halted the popemobile, and a member of the Swiss Guard facilitated the transfer of the child to Pope Leo, who proceeded to bestow a blessing upon the infant. The occasion was met with joy by the Taiwanese delegation present. Lin, who is the baby's mother, shared that she and her husband were managing the care of their young child and another sibling while traveling with thei r church group. She expressed their initial hope was merely to attend a sermon in Vatican City, but the suggestion from their parish priest, Rev. Vincent Balsan, led them to present their child during the Pope's appearance. Lin conveyed their gratitude for what they described as a blessed and unforgettable experience.
