Rock Star-Turned-Politician Freddy Lim to Represent Taiwan in Finland

Taipei: Freddy Lim, a rock singer who transitioned into politics, has been selected by Taiwan’s government as the nation’s forthcoming representative to Finland, as confirmed by a source within local diplomatic circles on Saturday.

According to Focus Taiwan, the source verified local media reports indicating that Lim is set to be named Taiwan’s next envoy to Finland. However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) stated that the appointment is contingent upon a formal announcement from the Presidential Office.

President Lai Ching-te has prioritized values-oriented diplomacy, while Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung has advocated for cultural diplomacy. The source highlighted that Lim’s appointment is expected to “inject new vitality” into Taiwan’s diplomatic efforts and strengthen ties with Europe.

The source noted that Finland is recognized for its mature democracy, robust civil society, comprehensive social welfare system, and focus on human rights and international justice. Finland is also celebrated for its heavy metal music-a cultural aspect that aligns with Lim’s background.

Following Liu Suan-yung’s appointment as Taiwan’s representative to Austria last year, Lim’s new role is anticipated to further enhance Taiwan’s presence in Europe. Lim, who co-founded the opposition New Power Party (NPP) in 2015, was elected as an NPP lawmaker in 2016. He left the NPP in 2019 and was re-elected as an independent legislator in 2020.

In March 2023, Lim announced he would not seek re-election due to family commitments. He joined the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in November 2023. As a lawmaker with a focus on foreign affairs and national defense, Lim has frequently visited Europe and the United States, including attending the Copenhagen Democracy Summit in Denmark and the Oslo Freedom Forum in Norway.

Lim, 49, embarked on his music career in high school as a guitarist. In 1995, during his second year of college, he founded the heavy metal band Chthonic as the lead vocalist, becoming known as “the Black Sabbath of Asia.” In 2020, The Guardian described Chthonic as “cultural ambassadors for Taiwan-its history, myths, and struggles.”

Lim also served as the head of Amnesty International Taiwan from 2010 to 2014.
