Taiwan’s state military research institute began test-firing missiles from a military base in Pingtung County early Tuesday, kicking off three days of missile tests.
According to a Fisheries Agencies (FA) aviation safety notice, the missile tests are being carried out by the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) at the Jiupeng military base and will last until Thursday.
The NCSIST did not specify what type of missiles are being tested.
In the notice, the FA said there would be a total of four rounds of missile tests during this three-day period, which would only take place in the early morning or midday.
The FA warned aircraft and ships to avoid the test danger zone which covers Taiwan’s southeast waters surrounding Orchid Island and Green Island.
Unmanned air system drones will also be deployed by the NCSIST to monitor the tests, it added.
Meanwhile, a Taiwan military source revealed that a Chinese warship was spotted 60 nautical miles northeast of Orchid Island at around 5 a.m. Tuesday, just as the NCSIST began its first day of missile tests.
Military spokesman Sun Li-fang (???) later told CNA that the military has been closely monitoring Chinese military maneuvers in the waters and airspace surrounding Taiwan, without elaborating.
