Taipei:Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) has condemned China for issuing a statement that undermines the Republic of China's (ROC) sovereignty. MOFA emphasized the unchangeable fact that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait are not subordinate to each other.
According to Focus Taiwan, China's Foreign Ministry released a joint statement following discussions between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema. This statement reaffirmed Gabon's adherence to the "One China principle" and included what MOFA described as a distortion of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758.
The ministry criticized China for using bilateral meetings to pressure other countries into making statements that challenge the ROC's sovereignty. MOFA reiterated that the ROC is a sovereign, independent nation that has never been governed by the People's Republic of China (PRC), asserting that only Taiwan's democratically elected government has the right to represent its people internationally, including within the United Nations.
MOFA further accused China of trying to disrupt the international order by embedding its "One China principle" into bilateral agreements with other countries and urged Gabon to resist Beijing's political influence.
