Taiwan Falls to Australia 3-0 in World Baseball Classic Opener

Taipei: Taiwan opened its Pool C games at the World Baseball Classic against Australia at the Tokyo Dome. Right-hander Hsu Jo-hsi took the mound as the starting pitcher, with Lin Tzu-wei positioned at second base. Despite a strong lineup, Taiwan was unable to score, ultimately facing a 3-0 defeat.

According to Focus Taiwan, the game began with Taiwan’s batting order led by Stuart Fairchild, followed by Lin An-ko and Chen Chieh-hsien. Yu Chang batted fourth, while Wu Nien-ting was fifth in the order. Chiang Kun-yu, Lin Tzu-wei, Chiang Shao-hung, and Chen Chen-wei completed the lineup. Despite their efforts, Taiwan’s bats were unable to break through Australia’s pitching.

In the first inning, Taiwan struggled to generate offense, leaving a runner stranded on first. By the second inning, both teams had yet to score, with Taiwan’s Lin Tzu-wei striking out to end the frame. Taiwan’s pitching change in the fifth inning saw Chen Po-yu replaced by Sun Yi-lei, but Australia capitalized with a two-run homer by Robbie Perkins, taking a 2-0 lead.

Taiwan’s offensive struggles continued as they failed to capitalize on opportunities. In the seventh inning, Travis Bazzana extended Australia’s lead with a solo home run, making it 3-0. Despite multiple pitching changes and attempts to rally, Taiwan couldn’t put runs on the board.

The ninth inning saw a brief opportunity when Yu Chang reached base on a throwing error, but Taiwan was unable to convert, ending the game with a 3-0 loss. This result places Taiwan in a challenging position as they progress in the tournament, needing to regroup for their next match.
