Taiwan illustrator unveils ‘dreamlike’ solo exhibition in Milan Design Week

A solo exhibition dedicated to the works of Taiwanese visual artist, Page Tsou (???), will be unveiled on Saturday during the Milan Design Week 2021.

The exhibition is a joint-effort between the Associazione Culturale NOI ALTRI and the Cultural Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Italy, and honors 40 of the best works of the acclaimed Taiwanese illustrator.

Tsou has a significant number of accolades under his belt. He was a four-time nominee at the annual Bologna Children’s Book Fair, taking home the “International Award for Illustration” in 2011, and the “BolognaRagazzi Award” in 2017, where he also served as the curator of the Taiwan Pavilion at the exhibit.

Recently, Tsou’s illustration series “Invisible Bookstore” won two awards in the U.S. respectively: the 2021 American Illustration and the 3×3 International Illustration.

Titled “ONIRISMI_Page Tsou Solo Exhibition,” the artist’s Milan Design Week artwork features the idea of “dreaming” to present the abstract surrealism in his work.

According to exhibit organizers, the motif was inspired by how Tsou’s works, such as his acclaimed series of illustrations called “The And,” resonated like an operatic number, in tune with the design week’s own theme: “A Future Observed from the Future.”

Other examples of the artist’s works that echoed harmoniously the theme of the exhibition include the 2011 award-winning artwork “Dancing Feather,” and illustrations from “The Gift,” an art book Tsou published with the Taipei Fine Arts Museum.

Teng Mei-jung (???), chairwoman of the Cultural Division in Italy, stated that while the division was established in October last year, its mission to advocate and organize arts events was stalled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the gradual easing of regulations, the trade office decided to invite Tsou as the flagship artist of the Design Week.

After its initial run in BASE Milano from Sept. 5 to Sept. 12, the exhibition will continue to be on display for one month at the NOI Bookstore from Sept. 13 till Oct. 13. A special section designated for Taiwanese books will also be featured at both locations.
