Taiwan Monitors U.S. Talks on Ukraine Conflict Resolution

Taipei: Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced on Tuesday that it is closely monitoring ongoing high-level talks in Washington, which aim to resolve the Russia-Ukraine war. The ministry emphasized that Taiwan will continue to provide humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

According to Focus Taiwan, MOFA spokesperson Hsiao Kuangwei stated that the ministry is staying updated on the latest developments in the war and the opinions of key stakeholders, including the United States, Ukraine, European countries, and Russia regarding potential peace negotiations. During a weekly briefing in Taipei, Hsiao reiterated Taiwan’s commitment to collaborating with the international community on humanitarian efforts for Ukraine.

The comments came in response to questions about Taiwan’s position on the Russia-Ukraine conflict following a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House. The meeting, aimed at discussing the end of the war, did not result in any concrete commitments from the U.S. regarding Ukraine’s security or movement toward a peace deal. However, Trump remained optimistic about future meetings between Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The White House meeting included several European leaders and took place shortly after a summit between Trump and Putin in Alaska, which did not lead to a ceasefire agreement. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, Taiwan has been active in providing humanitarian support, allocating over US$130 million for infrastructure projects in Ukraine and facilitating private donations exceeding US$32 million.

When asked about Taiwan’s response to a recent Trump television interview in which he claimed that Chinese President Xi Jinping assured him there would be no invasion of Taiwan during his presidency, Hsiao highlighted that Taiwan’s security primarily depends on its own efforts. Hsiao emphasized Taiwan’s ongoing focus on enhancing its self-defense capabilities and resilience.
