Taiwan unsure whether to invite Russia to 2023 transport safety meeting: TTSB

Taiwan’s transportation safety board said Wednesday it was unsure whether to invite Russia to the International Transportation Safety Association’s (ITSA) annual meeting in Taiwan next year.

Young Hong-tsu (???), who heads the Taiwan Transportation Safety Board (TTSB), visited Finland in June to take part in the 2022 ITSA conference, where he got to share with participating members some of Taiwan’s recent experiences in accident investigation, such as the Puyuma Express train derailment that killed 18 people in Yilan County in 2018.

Young said he had already personally invited the heads of accident investigation agencies from more than 30 countries to the meeting in Taiwan next year.

The TTSB chief told CNA that whether or not Russia got an invite would depend on national policy, due to the conflict in Ukraine.

Finland, which hosted this year’s meeting, did not invite Russia, he said.

The ITSA, an international network of heads of independent safety investigation authorities, was founded in 1993 by the transportation safety committees of the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, and Sweden.

This year will be the first time Taiwan has hosted the organization’s annual conference since 2010.
