Taiwanese Badminton Duo Exits Thailand Open in Semifinals

Bangkok: Taiwan’s Hsu Ya-ching and Sung Yu-hsuan were eliminated from the women’s doubles at the 2025 Thailand Open following a straight-games loss in the semifinals on Saturday. Hsu and Sung faced South Korea’s Jeong Na-eun and Lee Yeon-woo, losing 21-17, 21-19 in a match that lasted 55 minutes, which resulted in no Taiwanese competitors remaining in the Super 500 tournament.

According to Focus Taiwan, Jeong, who began partnering with Lee this year, previously secured an Olympic silver medal in mixed doubles at the 2024 Paris Games. Hsu and Sung, ranked No. 61 in the world, had reached the semifinals after an upset victory over their compatriots, Hsu Yin-hui and Lin Jhih-yun, who are ranked No. 20 globally.

This tournament marked the deepest run for Hsu and Sung in the approximately six months they have been playing together. After their match on Saturday, the 33-year-old Hsu expressed to CNA that despite adhering to their game plan, unforced errors during critical moments were detrimental to their performance.

Hsu commented on the outcome, acknowledging the disappointment of the loss but also recognizing the achievement of reaching the semifinals. She expressed hopes for maintaining their form and consistently reaching at least the quarterfinals or semifinals in future tournaments. The duo is set to compete next in the Malaysia Masters, which begins on Tuesday.
