Taiwanese Experts Draw Inspiration from India at AI Impact Summit

New delhi: Taiwanese experts attending the 4th AI Impact Summit in India noted the country’s development of AI models capable of handling numerous dialects, describing this approach as a valuable reference for Taiwan’s own “sovereign AI” initiatives. The summit, held in New Delhi from Monday through Friday, gathered global tech industry leaders and political figures from multiple countries, with Taiwan sending representatives.

According to Focus Taiwan, Liu Ching-yi, vice chair of the Taiwan AI Center of Excellence (AICoE) and a distinguished professor at National Taiwan University’s Graduate Institute of National Development, emphasized the summit’s focus on making AI use more equal and inclusive worldwide. Liu highlighted that Indian companies, with government support, are working on sovereign AI to protect cultural and linguistic diversity, with many launching mature language models compatible with 20 to 30 dialects.

Liu pointed out that Taiwan should pursue similar development strategies to maintain linguistic and cultural diversity while innovating in AI. She also stressed the importance of leveraging Taiwan’s strengths in chip technology to enhance its role in international AI cooperation and competition.

Chen Ling-jyh, CEO of Taiwan AI Academy, suggested that AI could be utilized to enhance government services in Taiwan, where languages such as Mandarin, Hakka, Hoklo (Taiwanese), and various Indigenous languages are spoken.

Hsia Yun, a researcher at Taiwan’s National Institute of Cyber Security’s Center of International Collaboration and Cybersecurity Governance, noted ongoing international cooperation in AI safety and governance. Hsia expressed hope for Taiwan to establish substantive cooperation with various countries and take a more active role in AI governance discussions.

The summit also saw Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi meet with leaders like French President Emmanuel Macron and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to strengthen global partnerships in AI. Notable attendees included OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Meta Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.
